Robert Munn on Software, the Web, and Everything
funk-y mo-jo
Posted by Robert Munn

What does it mean, exactly? Start with the second word, mojo, literally a magical spell, totem or amulet, as in amulets worn by adherents of voodoo. Less literally, I think of mojo as personal magic. Not the Harry Potter kind, the Miles Davis kind. Which leads to an exploration of the first word, funky. For the lexographical geeks, it might be useful at this point to review the reference.com definition of funky. Literally, in its earliest invocations, it means smelly, like moldy cheese. In the modern sense, funky carries several meanings, including "earthy and uncomplicated", "unconventional", and "campy".

In the musical world, it carries a meaning all its own-  "Combining elements of jazz, blues, and soul and characterized by syncopated rhythm and a heavy, repetitive bass line." (All quotes are from the reference.com definition). Which brings us back to Miles Davis. If you have ever listened to a song from "Kind of Blue" (and odds are you have even if you didn't know it), you can recognize funky music when you hear it.

Back to the name, then, funkymojo. It is the inner magic that empowers us all to visualize and create something of great beauty that speaks to the soul. This masic is personal in nature, a little earthy perhaps, and when it fills us we feel like we are "in a groove". Just like Miles.

So why funkymojo.com for a software site? Software design has many facets - engineering discipline, craft, and creative art form. I like the engineering, but I love the craft and the artistry. Well-designed and written software can be a thing of beauty (this from a kid who mocked his high school English teacher for comparing poetry and algebra). I admire the contributions of many people in the software world; this site is my attempt to show my gratitude by sharing what little wisdom I have accumulated over the years with other like-minded people. Enjoy.
